Various and Sundry
As I road down to Nairobi last Friday, we passed this loaded down bus, with "California Express" written on it. I did my best to catch a picture as we went by, and I thought, "What a contrast to the Foothill Transit Express Bus I used to ride into downtown Los Angeles everyday.
These little bikes are called pikies here in Kenya. Not many Kenyans own one, but they are used on the Kijabe mission station by many of the high school kids and Dads. Cars here are very very expensive, costing probably at least $20,000 more than in the States for the same vehicle! A home can be built for little more than the cost of a new car.
This is Kijabe Hospital, with an ambulance matatu in the foreground. Though there are a few ambulances here, there are no emergency medical services as we know them. If there's an accident on the highway, injured passengers are picked up by passing motorists and brought to Kijabe Hospital, over the bumpy bumpy roads that are prevalent everywhere. But those injured are thankful for the Good Samaritans who take the time to bring them to Kijabe.
In a small duka to the right of this sign,
sits the Kijabe post office.
One evening we were invited, with Ruth and Richard, to the home of a couple who work at the hospital, Susan and Sospeter. A group of about a dozen employees had gathered to bid Ruth and Rich farewell. We enjoyed barbecued goat. Don't jump to conclusions . . . it was very delicious!
And last and probably least . . . for you Southern Californians, KIIS-FM can also be found in Nairobi.
