Meet the Students
Meet our students! They have been such a fun group of kids and we will miss them: the great times we had together in class, our dinners at Mama Chiku's, the times we've eaten lunch in their dining hall with them, and the cookie bake I had with the girls.
We took all of them to Mama Chiku's last night, about filling her little restaurant. We had great fun, and as always, the food was scrumptuous. I commented that I wish I had learned to make chapatis while here, and the girls said, "You should have asked us. We would show you. You taught us how to make chocolate chip cookies. We would teach you to make chapatis." Maybe next time. They told us they are praying that we will come back and teach them again, and that they will miss us very much.
Gene is giving his final lecture to the students here. I think we all had mixed emotions. They were relieved to be finished, but also seemed to regret that our time with them was over.
Last night, Gene told the students that he really isn't a "Dr." as he was introduced in chapel. They all started laughing and said, "We knew you were going to tell us that, and we already know that. But to us, you are 'Dr.' and so we will call you 'Dr. Luber.'" I chimed in and said, "Good. I've always wanted to be a doctor's wife!"
These kids have impacted our lives more than we have theirs. We came to teach them, but they have taught us. We came to encourage them, but they have encouraged us. We came to be an example to them, but they have been examples to us. Their faith to believe God will provide the funds they need to attend Moffat puts my faith to shame. Yes, it was a step of faith for us to make this trip to Kenya, but in proportion, it was a small step compared to the challenge facing these students as they trust God to provide for their needs. They are steadfast in believing God has called them to prepare for ministry at Moffat, and they press on. Please pray for them.
We will soon leave Kenya, but Kenya will never leave our hearts. We leave encouraged, enriched and greatly blessed . . . many times o'er.
